Brake lights and taillights

Asked by Brian Apr 26, 2023 at 03:04 PM about the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab LB 4WD

Question type: General

I have a 03 Silverado ext cab. I replaced the taillights with a LED housing
when I purchased the truck about a month ago. When I put the new taillights
in all worked great but now the brake lights will not come on if the taillights
are on, the top 3rd brake light will however.  When I turn the taillights off all 3
brake lights work just fine. I have replaced the lights a few times and have
the same issue with every light I put in. I also changed out the LCM with an
LED LCM to stop the hyper flashing.

Sound like a grounding issue, the rear taillight wiring is not the best on these rigs, I had to redo my taillight grounds on both sides on my Silverado last year.

I was thinking that also but why would they work when one light is off and not together. I will be checking this this weekend when my son brings the truck home.

The brake lights will ground through the tail light circuit. when taillights are on there is no ground for brake lights.

This makes perfect sense. How do I fix this? just clean up the ground wires?

That and you will also need to check the sockets as the grounds inside then can burn out. usually you will see a small burnt mark inside the socket.
