What is wrong with my car?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Does not always crank.  Cable was loose - got that fixed.  Ran fine for 1 day. Would not crank, but did have lights.  Next morning, it cranked. Does not have that clicking usually associated with starter issue.  When it will not crank, there is a low whirling sound when key is turned on.

Your starter may be on the way out. Next time it won't crank, have someone hold the key to the ON position like they're starting the car. As they hold the key, rap on the starter with a hammer. If it suddenly turns over, it's the starter giving you the issue.
