the whistling endine

Asked by meeksy Feb 25, 2007 at 08:19 PM about the 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I start my car during cold weather, the engine will "whistle" or squeel at a very high pitch and relatively loud. The whistling will eventually cease when the engine warms up. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

Hello, A whistling noise typically indicates a vacuum leak. It may also be an air filter leak. Best of luck! CarGrrl

The 1995 Thunderbird uses a serpentine belt. Check the condition of the belt, and of the idler pulleys. Also listen / check for any other bearing such as alternator, water pump, power steering, and A/C pulley to see if you can hear anything there. You mention the sound as being a whistle - which can be a vacuum leak, or is it a squeal, which is more likely to be a dry bearing as I mentioned above.
