Running an engine too cool is as harmful as running it too hot. In addition, Tom is correct about coolant flow. Move the coolant too fast and it will not absorb enough heat to do its job. Always use a thermostat that is near the temperature that the manufacturer recommends. If your vehicle is overheating then the cause must be found and corrected.

The thermostat slows the flow of fluid so as it passes through the radiator, it has a chance to cool. If it goes too fast through the radiator, it does not cool down, and the engine will get hotter and hotter. What temp range you put in also makes a difference as the engine is designed to run at peak efficiency for correct fuel burn, smog control (emissions) and peak power output. Put in what the factory suggests. Never run it without a thermostat if you want your engine to function as it is designed to do.
