You'll have carb issues if its a stock 2 barrel, the float will stick, you'll have exhaust problems (mostly leaks or sensors), Compression will weaken if you rod on it alot, tranny issues (first or second gear will go out after some time or it'll stick in reverse), keep thick oil in it. Or it'll become an oil burner. I'd use Havoline 10w-40.

The 84 vette was the first year of the c4 body style. There were numerous problems with these cars. The cross fire injection system was problematic as was the 4+3 transmission. Without more knowledge about your mechanical abilities or knowing more about the car, it would be hard to advise you on what your car needs. Personally, I would try to repair what needs fixed on the fuel injection system. Changing to a 4 barrel carbuerator would require additional changes to your car's sensors and computer system.

I bought a brand new 84 with the automatic. I guess i was lucky and didn't have very many issues for the 11 years I owned it. It was my daily driver. They are indeed known for some problems but mine was great. I did high speed auto cross and road race with it in SCCA and was one of the class champions 3 years in a row in bone stock condition. As said by rickbu, fix what it has or you'll open up a whole new can of worms unless you want to do an entirely new engine for it. It's only 205hp but that was a lot back then. I'm sure a carb will only degrade the performance from there unless it goes with a cam upgrade.

I’m the original owner of a 1984 Corvette, 2 tone bronze manual with metallic leather, and have never had a problem with it. It is “ the third model of the first model year” of the newly re-designed Corvette, and there are big differences between that and the first models that came out in 1983. There were problems with those. 1984 models were Motor Trends Car of the Year. The only problem I had, after racing it a few times, were the need to replace the clutch. Minor oil leaks. Freon replacement. Radio never great although cassette player had excellent sound. The engine is extremely powerful and that’s the thrill. Know what you’re doing or the car will change lanes on you. Tight suspension!
