Want to change to a better engine

The easiest way to do this would be to turn it into a Mustang. Swap over a Mustang 5.0, transmission, and rear end. Use an aftermarket performance chip and tune it. Use as much of the Mustang's exhaust as possible, may need to custom fab some pipe. May as well swap over a Mustang's disc brakes and wheel hubs. Then tie the unit body together. Cheapest way to do that is with a bolt in kit. A wrecked Mustang donor car would be a good way to do this project. FYI, the Taurus has some weak points that would NOT make sense to swap out JUST the motor - namely the torque convert and trans, drop in a high horsepower motor and you'll watch your stock TC and trans blow up. The TC spline plate to front pump shaft is a notorious weak link in any Taurus. The rear diff is also not going to be suited for speed, that's common in any family sedan. A rear diff from a Mustang would be a huge improvement. Whatever combination of engine, trans, and rear diff. you come up with almost certainly require a custom tuned aftermarket ECU.

It is already asleep. I would consider a different vehicle.
