Fluids changed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I took my 2007 with a manual transmission and 48,000 miles on it to the shop for state inspection. The guy at the shop recommended I have the fluids changed like the brake fluid, anti freeze, rear differential, and transmission oil. Should these things be done of is he trying to sell me something I don't need?

You are getting ripped off. Transmission at 100,000 miles, brake fluid only if it is discolored, rear differential what the suggested manufacture recommends. Most rear differentals do not leak from the factory until it is opened for service and it is hard to keep them sealed. Rear differentals only need changing if it starts to leak or noise is coming from inside it. Go to another garage and ask what is recommended. If they are honest, they will tell you the same thing. I bet these people will also tell you the air in the tires is old and it will rot the tires from the inside. :-). Find another garage. Ask around, there are 95% honest garages out there.

Yes i did ask around. The only thing i found in my owners manual was changing automatic transmission fluid at 50,000 miles and changing oil.

The transmission oil change depends a lot on where and how the vehicle is driven. Hot LA traffic, dusty mid west, or desert areas, or hard fast driving, perhaps yes. Normal driving, maybe more like the 100K most manufactures recommend. Factory wants your business and money. If it voids a warranty, have it done at 50K. If it is hard driving and hot or dirty driving, do it. Don't touch the rear end. Brake fluid maybe if it is dirty, or when the pads are worn out. Have it checked then. You know your driving habits, follow your gut feelings.
