Simple question

Asked by TCaspary Jun 12, 2018 at 11:00 PM about the 1987 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe RWD

Question type: General

I have a 1987 2.8 V6. I looked all over for
one simple detail and found none. Is my
block aluminum?

Thanks. Been sitting here thinking it was aluminum. Shavings wouldn't pick up when I put a magnet to them.

I'm guessing it might be the water pump grinding. Since my coolant practically has glitter in it. The shavings are the grain of sand or smaller.

True. But while the block is iron, the water pump is aluminum. Could be why the magnet wasn't working.

Its shavings. The stuff is resting on the bottom. I have reason to believe that its the water pump, since that's made of aluminum. Its a replacement part, it must be that.... But sad part is that there's shavings in the oil too.

Engine runs like new, compression is normal. No oil in the coolant nor is there coolant in the oil. It runs like it never had a problem... To what my limited knowledge on cars tell me

Though I will say that the oil pan was dented real bad from the last owner. Possibly damaging the oil pump or whatever's inside it that helps get oil through the system. But my gauge tells me the oil is still getting pressure. At least over 40.
