I have read some reports of excessive oil consumption in
this year toyota. Is there any way to check this before I buy
a used corolla and is it a widespread problem

Not really a way to check it, unless you have a technician handy, or want to remove this component and give it the old shake test, but the first and simplest way to ensure the most common problem of oil consumption is taken care of is to replace the PCV Valve.
