How to figure out the different call numbers for a 911?

Example.
Why or how do you know what to call different 911's.
As in 996,997 etc.

You look at the model year and the style of the car, then go to Wikipedia or similar. Just the same as if you were trying to work out the chassis designation numbers for Mercedes or BMW.
