when should the timing belt be replaced on a Chev v6?

we have a 1996 chev malibu 6cyl...and there is not even the mention of a "timing belt" in the manual.

Because it doesn;t have one - it has a chain and is usually good for the life of the car or if it starts making grinding noises.
