ok any clues as to where to look appreciated figure the ecu may be wacked out

Could be the ECM, or it could very well be a short in the wiring harness leading the alternator not to charge. Try replacing or testing the battery -- Many newer alternators WILL NOT put out a charge if the battery is at less than 12 volts. This is a safety feature to ensure that the alternator doesn't burn itself out trying to charge a dead battery. This might also explain lack of dash component function.

put hot battery in 12.6 volts. tach and speedo went away before battery went dead will ring out the wiring and I have another ecu comming Thanks

Just had the alternator replaced on an otherwise great car. However I noticed prior to the radio and speedometer which zeroed when the electrical problem 1st arose last week, the speedometer would occasionally get stuck at 60km/h and then unstick to 100km/h.
