My 1969 Firebird 400 convertible hit 180 MPH. I'm not believed. Thank you.

Question type: General

I had a 1969 Firebird 400 convertible, I had to get home in time without
getting another speeding ticket, or my father would take my car away from
me. I was late and speeding, a trooper put his siren on, I took off...didn't want
to lose my car to another speeding ticket. Yeah, young and dumb. Anyway, I
sped up, I saw my speedometer hit 180 mph. I did get away, cop couldn't
catch me. Made it home on time without a ticket. Now here is my problem,
some people don't believe me. I have no reason to lie about the reading on
my speedometer. I don't understand or read specs. Some guy posted specs
indicating my car could only do 115 mph that isn't true, maybe that was a
different engine or something, or maybe that's when they put a "guard" (I
think that's what they call it) on the car. I guess I need the specs of MY car
as it DID 180 mph on a cool dry night. I was shaking when I pulled into
someones driveway, not from the speed, from the Trooper. Whew, that was a
close one. I NEVER did that again. I hope someone can help me find my
specs or validate my experience. Thank you. (My husband believes me!)

The speedometer is clearly not accurate. I also seriously doubt your car is geared for that speed.

I received a nasty answer via instagram. To be clear, the speedometer in my car went up to 200 MPH. The nasty man said my speedometer didn't go up to 180 MPH I did have the wood grain dash and console if that helps in identifying my car. I just read that a particular model only had 8 made. Would that have been my car?

Full of crap, speedo only went to 160 and they wouldn't do anything close to that.

Those are great cars but it would take the proper gears and at least 500 real HP to go that fast.

The car was ordered from Paramus NJ. I purchased it new, well my father purchased, it was in my name. Is there a place to find old motor vehicle registrations with data information? in NY?

Due to privacy laws you cannot get any registration data unless (maybe) you have the title in your name.

Title went when I sold the car, I think. So that's a dead end and a stupid law. I read that there were 8 rare convertibles sold in 1969. I'm wondering if mine was one of them. I think I'm going to regret not having the transmission fixed. The body and interior were perfect. I killed the transmission and bought a new Blazer hard top convertible. I just looked them up, mine didn't come with a soft top and it was a pain to remove the hard top, but it was a great car. I bought that to replace my dead Firebird in 1971; so my transmission only lasted 2 years, bummer.

My 67 Firebird convertible with a hot Chevy 350 and a 4 speed would easily do 140 +.

The rare Ram air cars were not powerful enough to get anywhere near 180 mph.

Ed may have a point. If the car was Canadian 200kph is slightly over 120 mph which is feasible for a 400 Firebird.

The radical Ram air IV engines came with low gears which would totally preclude a high top speed. The Ram air 4 engine was still only rated at 360 hp gross, not net like modern cars.

Metric speedometer? I had an American car, built for the American market. My speed tickets matched my MPH. I was informed by someone that I may have had a Central Office Production Order car. A COPO which is worth half a million dollars today. That is amazing! I know the speed I did, I know it wasn't metric. We can agree to disagree until I find a picture of my speedometer. In the interim... Thank you for your responses.

I would love to do that; if I had those records this would be easy. Going on line to see if Car Dealer is still in business. I purchased it pre-computer era. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the dealer is a records hoarder.

The dealership has been closed for 6 years. They were number one!! That's why I went there to buy my car in 1969. Nothing lasts forever.

I appreciate that I'm being taken seriously, now, by a few members. A friend asked, "Do you have a picture of the dashboard? I don't think so, that was pre-cell phone selfie. That would make it easy. I will continue my search tomorrow.

Ed92626 I was referring to previous speeding tickets. That's why I was racing home, I was over the speed limit to get home on time, a cop put his siren and light on... I didn't want my father to take my car away from me. He said, "One more speeding ticket and I'm taking your car..." I had already received two tickets. I panicked and took off, I couldn't get caught and get another ticket. You mention strength...fight or flight. Obviously I picked flight. The memory is getting clear as I re-hash this over and over. Adrenalin must have kicked in I remember getting nervous at one point when I almost lost it, I must have slowed down and regained control somehow. I pulled into a driveway and shut my lights, waited for the cop to pass and proceeded to speed home in a normal range of speeding. I never knew my car was an oddball until I posted my story and people started saying that my speed was impossible and that was just the other day. I'm learning all these terms now. I wasn't nor am I a motor-head. I just know what my speedometer numbers went up to and that was 200 MPH. The car was purchased at Cerami Pontiac in Paramus, NJ. We lived about 30 to 45 minutes away over the border in NY. My father was never in Montreal, The speedometer is as I said it was. I wasn't out for a joyride I was with my friends. I was just speaking the truth on fb and Bam!! The reaction I got was not expected... No way, blah, blah, blah. I looked under the hood maybe once or twice when my boyfriend opened it, all I can remember about that is, it had a lot of stuff in there. I had no interest under the hood. I had the upgraded wood grain dash and console. That's all I know. I didn't think my car was special, I thought they were all built the same although, I always thought mine looked better than the others for some reason. Well, I hope we get to the bottom of this mystery, it's not like I have the car, I traded it for a Blazer hard top convertible. Oh and I never did race in that car, until the cop, but did mountain challenges with the Blazer against Toyota and Jeep with my boyfriend at the wheel for that. I hated that!! Thought we were going to flip over backwards. Well there you have it, I'm not a liar. It is what it is and I don't have the car to benefit from it anyway and that's a shame because I could take a picture and the car could be examined.

United States 1969 Firebirds, all of them, had 160 MPH speedometers from the factory! That translates to roughly 260 KPH for Canadian cars! Hope that helps! Jim
