Ignition and key very hot, how and why?

I have a 2003 land rover discovery se7, after dring home from friends home the ignition
and key were very hot. What is the problem and how to fix it?

very strange- only thing I can think of is that there is electrical current grounding through the assembly- might be time for a new ignition switch
