The 1.8 is a Ford single overhead cam engine. The 1.9 is a Mazda double overhead cam. The 1.8 is one of the very few engines in the last 30 years that is not an interference design. Virtually every engine now, however, is.

http://www.edmunds.com/ford/escort/1991/ -- The gt of 1991 had 1.8L I4 DOHC 16V FI Engine. All others in 1991 had 1.9L I4 SOHC 8V FI Engine. Or that's the info I found anyway. if 1.8L dohc then no it's not but if 1.9L sohc then yes it is.
