what is a continuously variable transmission

I found this saying on the Dodge Calliber SXT....not quite sure what they are and need
comparison to automatics

It has an infinite number of gear ratios that you will not feel it shift, because it doesn't shift in the conventional sense. It's hydraulic operated, has no dipstick.
