1996 Outback 2.2L: timing belt or chain and is it interferring or non-interferring?

I think your title is a question of whether your engine is an interference engine? Meaning, if your timing belt breaks will the piston contact the valves. Your engine will not bend valves if the timing belt breaks but I would change it before that happens. Follow your service manual on recommended changes and you can't go wrong.
