What kind of noise is it? If it is a creaking or groaning noise these metros did suffer from dry / worn suspension knuckle joints, the joint where the hydrogas unit attaches to the upper suspension arm. The 'knuckle' ball joint sits in the top of the upper suspension arm and has a plastic 'cap' or seat which wears away and causes a creaking.
So, like you stated fist thing to check is wheel bearings. Jack it up and shake the wheel, there should be no play at all up and down or side to side. Then i'd look at brake components. Is the brake on that side sticking a little? also check the dust plate behind the rotor, it can get bent at rub the rotor and make a metallic grinding or rubbing sound. It can just be bent away from the rotor. CV axle failing will be accompanied with vibrations and/or clicking while turning.
