A lot of people agree that the inventor of the car was Karl Benz. Karl Benz was an engineer and inventor who lived in Germany during the late 1800's and early 1900's. On January 29, 1886 Karl Benz patented the first car. On July 3, 1886 it was first demonstrated for the public in Mannheim, Germany
Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot in 1769 STEAM Built the first self propelled road vehicle (military tractor) for the French army: three wheeled, 2.5 mph. Karl Friedrich Benz 1885/86 GASOLINE First true automobile. Gasoline automobile powered by an internal combustion engine: three wheeled, Four cycle, engine and chassis form a single unit.
I must clarify and there is a lot of confusion over this topic. Karl Benz (who was later sanctioned by Adolf Hitler to design a greater automobile, resulting in the evolution of both Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz) although he was a major part of the development of the automobile was actually not the creator. as stated "Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot in 1769 STEAM Built the first self propelled road vehicle (military tractor) for the French army: three wheeled, 2.5 mph. Karl Friedrich Benz 1885/86 GASOLINE First true automobile. Gasoline automobile powered by an internal combustion engine: three wheeled, Four cycle, engine and chassis form a single unit" Only improved the first prototype by pioneering the internal combustion engine more commonly known today as the gasoline engine

According to the Black inventor (by Keith C. Holmes), the rotary engine was invented by Benjamin H. Taylor into slavery in 1819 in Loudon County, Virginia, who invented the rotary engine Patent number (202, 888) from this invention was the steam engine, fuel pump, and other necessary engines to run the automobile. If Karl Benz indicated that he invented the car in 1886 and Nicolas Joseph in 1885, is it an infringement on Benjamin H. Taylor's patent (#202, 888)? Also, Lee R. Chamblis who invented the vehicle wheel in May 31, 1898
