My 1994 honda accord ex coupe will cut out when I pull the positive cable and I just bought new alternator?

So  one day I started my car slid my automatic shift lever to D4 and the light on in the gauges didnt light up the rest do light 1,2,D2,D3 but D4 not .Then it kille the battery thought it was alternator turn out it wasnt .....help plz

ok so when I put the test light on between the cable and battery does it matter if on the negative or positive side?
