Are you trying to describe a "timing mark" on the crank shaft? If you are, the timing mark on my Sierra is on the right side of the crank shaft pulley. A small bracket looking piece of metal with several incremented marks engraved in it, just to the right of the crankshaft pulley, almost completely hidden from clear view by my alternator and power steering pump bracket.
