usually a cooling fan will kick on when a/c is commanded to get more air through the condenser. thats if it has electric fans. if you have a mechanical fan its connected to the motor. and when it kicks in it makes a pretty loud noise and usually bogs down the engine a bit. does the a/c work properly? is the noise sounds like something is coming apart or just a fan running?
