Most likely it fell down into the bottom of your oil pan. If you want to do a real redneck emergency fix, I would find a big magnet and stick it to the bottom of your oil pan. That way it will hold the metal piece to the bottom of the pan. Not sure if the piece could possibly get sucked up to do damage.

What hurts the engine is the metal filings that go through the sire mesh screens and into the bearing journals to scour the cam and crank. A large bit of metal will settle down to the bottom for the long drive home. Yes if you can, ASAP pull the pan and remove the dip shi-/stick. How much broke off? A few inches or the long length? The above suggestion on the magnet was my first reaction for the emergency temp fix. If it is a real long piece, can the outer dip stick holder be pulled and will it be still inside it so it can be removed? Worth a try.

It’s aluminum so the magnet won’t do any good. There is a screen on the oil pick up so it won’t cause a problem. Just sucks that such an expensive engine ($10- $12k) comes with suck a cheap dip stick...
