97 Chevy truck backfires

Asked by GuruT31JL Jul 25, 2018 at 10:53 AM about the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97 Chevy Silverado Z71 (5.7) that backfires
and pops through the exhaust when running
downhill and occasionally on a level road. I notice it
more while on cruise control.
It idles and accelerates fine. It only pops when it’s
decelerating gradually.

Maybe it's over fueling even when letting off the gas? How long since a tune-up? Might be other issues?
