Car only goes into drive (no reverse)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '85 Mercedes E190 and when I try and shift from park it only goes into drive. I shift to Reverse and it goes forward. Neutral=forward etc. etc. I asked my step-dad who was a mechanic and he thinks from the sound of it it may be a transmission problem. Is there anything I can do (short term), short of pushing the car backwards everytime I need to go in reverse?
