how to shift

For a 2007 Jeep Liberty:  the dealer told me when shifting into 4wdpart-time, I should take my foot off the gas, then pull the shifter quickly and hard. Then I saw in the manual it states to take your foot off the gas AFTER the shift.  I am totally confused, which method is correct?

shift it just like you would a manual trany lift off and pull back and then press the gas ...// this will be a bit more difficult on dry pavement....//and easier on wet snowy slippery conditions less gear clash

I allays put the jeep in neutral, shift into 4 wheel drive then put it back in drive going about 10-20 MPH.....That seems to be the best way ,according to CHRYSLER MECHANICS......hope this helps
