What is the reason for smoke to come out of my steering colum on the right side near the ignition? and is this a common problem or a saftey issue that was recalled?

I believe there was a recall on this in the mid to late '90s cars. You don't state your year of Grand Prix but at any rate, sounds like you have some fried wires in your ignition system. Get it fixed before there's a fire.

you have a bad (defective) turn signal swich. never heard of or seen one catch on fire... replace the switch and the smoking will stop....this problem existed on 88-94 models
