Why would an engine stall out when driving down the road?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 92 olds cutlass supreme stalls out when I am driving down the road.  I recently had the catalytic converter replaced along with the upstream oxygen sensor as well (since it was bad).  I have also had the spark plugs and wires replaced, switched out the fuel filter & cleaned out the throttlebody too.  I noticed while driving or sitting at idle, there was black smoke coming from the exhaust.  I had trouble passing inspection this year, its the first time I have really had trouble passing inspection.  I went to go to the grocery store just a little while ago & my service engine soon light came on & would not go above 35 miles an hour.  Any help in appreciated.  Thanks.

James
