This was ages ago, but for anyone else searching for help opening the trunk with the front latch: There's a little white latch thing on the trunk that I noticed when it's flipped up, the latch won't work. When it's flipped down, it will be popped open. I needed to put the small part of the back seat down and use a long stick (and flashlight) in order to flip it back up. Now I make sure it's flipped down since the key is not working at the moment any more.
