My 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse standard transmission will go forward but not into reverse and when you have it in gear the gear shift fall into the neutral postion . What could be the problem

internal synchronizers may be the problem. has it been abused with grinding gears in the past? not opening the clutch when shifting?
