Subaru piston rings

Asked by Eli777sha Dec 27, 2016 at 05:51 AM about the Subaru Outback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need to know why my car is driving 5 mph and the
rpms are high, piston rings? Clutch? It's not the
coolant or anything, just stinky white smoke and no
power.

Stinky white smoke out the exhaust is ether a blown head gasket in-which the smell would be from anti-freeze leaking into the cylinders and burning out the exhaust, the smell would be a sweet type of smell, or a problem with the catalytic converter which would be more of a stinky egg smell.

It is a Subaru thing, all that smoke and no power. Probably a blown head gasket or bad engine.

Subaru's have little power to begin with but I think their infamous head gaskets are to blame.

If your head gaskets failed, you definitely want to investigate the newly designed head gaskets.

The best way to replace head gaskets is to pull the engine so that proper prep of the block surface can be done. Use multi-layer gaskets and if it were my car I would install new head bolts while I was at it. You also should replace the timing belt, idler wheels and water pump.
