1999 Subaru Engine Swap

Asked by canoedeaner Feb 17, 2019 at 09:22 PM about the Subaru Outback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,  I have a 1999 Subaru Outback Legacy, 2.5L, manual transmission that
needs a new engine.  I found one that matches except for the fact that it
came out of an auto transmission.  Will this work? My mechanic says that it
shouldn't be a problem.  He says that the flywheel might have to be
switched.  I've heard too many horror stories about getting 99% done and
then finding the one thing that doesn't line up and don't want to do this if it's
not worth it.  Thanks!!

I see no issue and yes the flywheel is different.

I have done that same swap on a 1998 Forester with no issues.
