Why do my rear tires suffer cupping damage?
I have a 2009 Focus with 130K miles (90% cruising 70 MPH on interstates) and the rear
tires developed problem flat spots. Tire salesman says the rear shocks need relpacing. Is
this a normal problem on the Focus?

Because you are not rotating your tires. Not the struts. Salespeople don't really know - they sell tires, shocks and such. Besides, if he can make a couple of hundred dollars in sales - he will. Rotate your tires ever-other oil change. It has nothing to do with your suspension.
One of two things. First not rotating your tires will cause this. 2nd , could have weak or bad rear shocks or struts. The reason is , is when your rear shocks are bad it will cause your tires to bounce up and down on the contour of the road causing the chopping of the tires. I recommend my customers to rotate every oil change. Easier to keep up with it. Most likely it's from not rotating your tires.
