Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1989 F250 4X4, 351W with 4 speed manual with overdrive. I have an oil leak I am going to try and fix next week. I think the leak
is coming from rear of manifold. What all do I need to know when fixing it? And what is the easiest way to do it? And I am wanting
to remove the smog pump and hoses from the engine to allow it to run better, what all will I need to do that also and what is the
easiest way to do it?

Ok, one thing at a time: A common oil leak (and vacuum leak) is at the intake manifold. Nothing special about replacing the gasket but remember, half the job is in the prep work. Clean the threads and bolt holes and lightly lubricate with engine oil prior to assembly. Use the recommended torque spec and sequence. Use silicone sealant in the corners, glue down the front and rear gaskets and get someone to help you lower the manifold into place - it isn't that heavy but is awkward. Next: I strongly advise against removing the AIR injection pump or any of its components. You will gain nothing - at all - in performance. Your engine was designed to run with these components in place and DO NOT effect performance in any way. If you start hacking your emissions system, you'll always wonder why it doesn't run "quite right".
