The solenoid on the fender well is nothing more than an electrical switch. The small wire to the solenoid does nothing more than utilize an electro-magnet (low amperage) to engage the switch capable of carrying high amperage required to operate the starter. When the key is released the low amperage current is interrupted and a spring mechanism disconnects the voltage/amperage between the two contact points inside the solenoid.. Check the voltage on the small wire while someone turns the key to start, you should have voltage. If no voltage, check for electrical problems in that wire leading back to the ignition switch.
