i have a 2006 f150 5.8 two weeks ago it would bang hard once while cruising. now motor quits but starts up again easy.

Asked by nbill Mar 24, 2016 at 06:54 PM about the Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Problem started out as a little miss then gradually got worse.
Now the truck quit 3 times on 70 mile trip.
Its just like you shut the key off!
I pull over and turn the key off and the truck starts right up without hardly any
cranking.
Truck shows typical 420 code and has for a long time.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the catalytic converter took a bye bye. Have it scanned with live data scanner to make sure but 95% sure ur cats are bad

Okay, so my f150 5.4 w/ 176000 miles has a tapping sound that has gotten worse. I have change my plugs and bad coils, Change oil on time, and just had a full engine diagnostics done. Nothing is wrong with anything internal. They said it sounds like valve chatter, maybe sludge built up. I also had po420-po430 codes a while back, I ran emissions cleaner in my gas and the CEL is gone. I know that doesnt mean my cars are good now. When I am at a constant speed and hit the gas it bogs down and jumps to accelerate. With over drive off, it does better. Maybe cause higher rpm?.. Im puzzled o. How I can stop the tapping and fix the bogging issue Also the exhaust on my drivers side is louder tham the passenger side.. Passenger side sounds muffled, has alot of condensation coming out the tail pipes as well. It is true dual cat back.

Well to start, sounds like u have 2 different issues. First check oil pressure and see the difference from when u run the engine cold and wait to see what pressure drops to after it worms up. 5 4 3 valve have a phaser syste that adjusts the timing but requires at least 25psi to operate, if u have low oil pressure the phasers shatter and sounds like tapping noise. The other is your exhaust. Check the cads with live data scanner to see if they're plugged up or faulty oxygen sensor

I had my truck in the shop for engine diagnostics amd engine is good, just sounds like valve chatter according to them. Cat code was inefficient flow. Would a clogged cat make tapping sound? And rough idle?

Yeah, since it can't exhaust. But just for kicks, check the oil pressure when hot
