The mechanic that I took it to told me the wrench symbol was a soft warning,
but that the bands were slipping and I needed a new transmission. He quoted

Be very cautious about needing the work the "mechanic" said you need. The wrench on the dash is typically for engine issues - not your transmission. I would get a second opinion and maybe stop by your local Auto Zone and have them scan your trouble codes. That may tell you why the wrench is illuminating.

Four grand sounds a steep for a transmission rebuild. If that is the problem, which I doubt.
