Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

My 96 Protege's AC is not working. The suspicion is that the refrigerant is leaking, and my mechanic suspects that the source of the leak from the location indicated in the picture attached.

We have two questions.

1. What is the name of the part indicated by the arrow? We suspect it is upper portion of the "Receiver/Drier". Is this the case?

2. Where does the wire (indicated by the circle) connect to? We suspect it connected to some kind of switch, but where?

I will appreciate any tips / pointers to identify these parts

Thanks PS

That appears to be the low pressure switch. Those two wires would attach to it.

Switch might be good but the electrical connector is bad. Press in the little black tab on the left side and pull up on whole black part. Might have to wiggle but the connector will come off. Get new connector and connect the two wires to it and plug it back in.

Thanks very much. I was able to pull out the switch. So I looked up the "pressure switch" on the internet, and it appears it is connected to a place on the "receiver/dryer" is that the case. Secondly, is there any way to check the condition of the wires - or I jut need to get get the part and try it out? Are these the correct parts from RockAuto?: -- Receiver/Dryer: https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=3929697&cc=1191923 -- Pressure Switch: https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=3915462&cc=1191923

That appears to be them. But only with all veh information could I be sure. As for the wires. They are probably ok but you will need to get a new female connector to attach to them so they can be plugged back into the switch.

Oh sorry you ment the connector. Probably going to have to find one at an auto salvage. I will do some checking tho.

What I would do in your case is find out what different vehicles uses the same switch. Your local auto parts can give you that info. Should be several that use it. Then I would check local salvage yards for any of the vehicles on that list. Remove the female connector from one of those vehicles (make sure when you cut the wires you get as much extra wire as you can on the connector) . Then use butt splices with heat shrink to attach it to your wires. Maybe someone else on this site will have some info on where to get a new connector if that's what you prefer.
