cover for cup holder sticks

Asked by bushwood Jul 12, 2013 at 11:56 AM about the Mazda MX-5 Miata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The slide door over the cup holder only moves back half way.  How do I free it so it slides to expose both cup holders?

You may need to see if there's anything obstructing the cover from going back all of the way...something COULD be stuck in there. This definitely will never be an issue for me as I drive a 2011 MX-5 with the 6 speed manual and using these cupholders to actually hold cups of anything is NOT an option since I'd knock over a can of soda the 1st time I shifted gears.

It turns out to be the back vertical plastic panel is too low and blocks full travel of the door. I have adjusted it, but it will probably return to the lower position in time. something here needs modification.

If you head over to miata.net I believe they have a fix for this! Your car is a 3rd gen car which has an ( NC ) designation. Heres a link to some center console modifications: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=309688

I think these damn center cupholders were made without thinking of the arm's movement while shifting OR maybe they were designed for the few people who drive the Auto Trans Miatas?? Hopefully, this is addressed with the ND version. The door cupholders are a joke too...they will only hold a small plastic bottle of water or at best a kid's size or medium size soda from a fast food joint....Ugh!

I know what you mean Racer, when my wife and I had our NC, the cupholders and the 4X4 factory stance where my biggest gripes. They should have offset the cupholders some how. We will see when the ND drops!
