What oil is used from the factory?

Asked by DaveRas May 11, 2013 at 07:28 AM about the Honda Crosstour

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The dealer uses synthetic oil - when is the synthetic oil put in the first time?

1 Answer

"A Honda spokesman says its cars come from the factory with a special oil formulation for the break-in period. Honda advises owners to not change the oil early." Source: Edmunds. I have always found Edmunds to be a reliable source of information. The second part of your question is whenever the owner decides to do so. Personally I do not allow petroleum based oil in my car, ever. I made that decision after research, including listening to lectures by "Bobistheoilguy" among other things. I want and need to make my car last a very long time. The only place you will hear that you should change your oil every 3000 miles is from the oil~change chains like JiffyLube, only to get you in more often and spend money. Even petroleum based oil will last 5000 or more and a good synthetic much much longer than that. Now, filters. Not all oil filters are equal. It is very important to buy a high quality filter.
