Has anyone seen a Volkswagen Beetle with the turn signals that flipped out from the door posts?

Asked by Speedbuggy Jun 02, 2013 at 08:24 PM about the Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: General

My dad had a Volkswagen Beetle in 1967 - 1968 that had turn signal bars that flipped out from the door frames behind each door. I would like to find another one if possible. I am not sure what year the car was. Any help would be great.

Memory say it was an Europeon model. They stopped using them in US models in the 50's

the nomenclature for the part is "semaphore". California Import Parts may have the exact part for your Beetle. Is your Beetle 6volt or 12volt?

Pretty sure it was not a VW and was a Morris Minor. Looks close to the same design.

Sorry, Joe...VWs had the semaphores back in the early 50's.

I had a 1960 straight from Germany. Everything was in liters, kilometers and had the flip out blinkers. My Dad worked at the cape during Apollo 13, bought it from a fellow there.

My dad had a used VW in 1954 that had the flipper signal. Then a couple of years later with another VW the signal was with the lights. That first VW had the split rear window if that helps at all.

My dad owned a 1958 model with the flip out signal arms. It was my first car in high school. The arms had been disabled, but I found the wires to them and installed a spdt toggle switch to make them independently, just for the fun of it. Never knew the history of the car. We drove it for about 8-10 years and put in excess of 100,000 miles on it.

I bought one in 1958, used, with the semaphores, but do not know the model year - I would guess 1955. It had electrical problems. I bought a new export model in 1960, while in the Army in Europe, and it no longer had the flip-up turn signal indicators.

I just bought a 58 with semaphores. It also has front blinkers on the fenders. Did someone replace those fenders? Most of the photos I see have either semaphores or blinkers -- not both.

I believe the 1961 VW beetle that was imported into NZ was the 1st model that had the blinker indicates in the guards

Oh yes, I had one with those directional arrows that popped out it was on a VW I owned when I lived in Italy … they were nicknamed Mox Nix Stix

My father had a 1956 VW Beetle with the turn signals in the door posts that popped out when in use. One problem with the passenger side turn signal though, the passenger door would also pop open when the signal was used. I believe that model year also had the smaller back window.

we had one also in Germany...it had the flip out signals.. a split window and no gas gauge...there was a lever on the floorboard you flipped over when you run out of gas...gave you another one gallon to find the next pump...sure wish I had it now...

Bought a black 58 convertible when i was in the Army. We called the signals 'Idiot sticks'. Wonderful car. Traded it in on a 66 bug. Always have regrated it.
