Golf MKIV V5 2.3L 10v - new cam chains at 80k?

Asked by Charlie789 Aug 13, 2008 at 06:40 PM about the Volkswagen Golf

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Golf MKIV needs a service. It's done 80k. I am advised by the manufacturer to change the two cam chains - but its very pricey. Does anyone know whether this is necessary at this stage? Has anyone had a cam chain fail?

Hi Charlie, I notice that you say 10V. What year is your car?I never heard of a 10V V5 VW engine. I had a 2001 V5 2.3 Bora/Jetta 20V and from my knowledge the 2.3 engine has a cam belt and not chains. The service interval on engines with chains is not at 80 000km and will normally warn you because it will become very noisy. VW recommend to change the cam belt every 90 000km and service every 15000km except if you need do follow a mechanical warranty that stipulates ever 10000km .The only VW engine with Cam chains is the VR6 engine. One other tip. Change the radiator water every year and you will have no water pump problems.Do that just before the winter. My wife had a 1986 Golf GTS and her dad had it from new and that car had 386000km on the speedometer and its water was changed every year and the original water pump is still going. Note: 2 bottles anti frees per water mixture (VW recommended anti frees). I had 7 VW in total and was a pleasure and fun do drive and now driving a E39 520i BMW. I regret selling my V5 Bora. Here are the pictures.
