Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Spraying starting fluid into the throttle body and then it runs for a bit is a good indication. Would need to check the fuel pressure with a gauge, and also then watch the gauge to see if the system holds fuel pressure. Depending on what size engine, on the average fuel pressure should be around 46 to 50 lbs.
