Anytime a fuel pump runs dry you risk the chance of burning out fuel pump. The pump needs fuel to lubricate and cool pump. When you were running out of gas the pump was going full bore to keep pressure up. This will cause pump failure. Changing the pump on these cars is not to terrible of a job. My advise would be to get a Haynes book and follow their procedure. The books are about $30 and should be available at most Auto Stores. Repost if you have any questions.
