I am getting a "check engine" light on my dash

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz that tries to die when I accelerate from a traffic lite stop. I have to play with the gas pedal to keep the engine from dying.
The yellow "check engine" light flashes on the dash. Could this be from a dirty carburetor or bad gas since the car has been sitting for a long time?  I just bought it. The seller had filled the gas tank and drove a few hundred miles to deliver it to me and had no problems. (Yes there still are good people out there)!   Now the tank gauge shows low at 8 gallons remaining.I will go now and buy a can of gasoline treatment and add about 7 gallons of premium gasoline since who knows when someone might contact me with another possible fix. Thanks people.

You can scan for the trouble codes. On an 85 Cadillac, you need to jump the terminals of the diagnostic port. Check youtube or online on how to do it. Look up "How to pull GM OBDi codes"
