How does one remove the head light switch

hammer and chisel usually does the trick, or try looking behind the switch for a screw or fastener to be removed, my advice to you is to take your automobile to your local shop and a qualified technician should be able to diagnose the malfunctioning light switch

Please ignore the numb-nuts we have here.....If I remember correctly there is a small spring loaded button on the switch that is pushed to release the knob and shaft, them the bezel or trim ring can be removed to take the switch out. Similar to the photo.

Thanks. The problem is, I can't see how to get my hand in there to push said button.

Is it possible to unscrew the bezel (trim ring) and rotate the switch assembly so that you can reach the button?
