Low oil pressure in Chevy Express 1500

Asked by mapriho Oct 08, 2018 at 02:30 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Express

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Chevy Express 1500. 5L 8cyl. It has about 130,000 miles.
Recently, I have had low oil pressure after the car warms up. It had just been
low, but now it will routinely reads 0 while at a stop. I have already changed
the sending unit. I have done manual test and found the pressure to be inline
with what the gauge was telling me. I do not hear any noise coming from the
engine. In fact if it were not for the light on the dash I would not know there is
an issue. I routinely check the oil and it never seems to be low. Most of what
I read mentions rod bearings, but I am not clear if I can have an issue there if
there is no noise. I'd appreciate any ideas on what to check next. I'm about
ready to replace the oil pump just to see if that makes a difference. I'd
appreciate any ideas on what I should check and if I can have a bearing
issue if there is no noise.

Bad oil pressure sender. They get leaks that happen when the oil gets hot. You'll have to get access to rear of engine, and look for oil on sender electric plug. The sender has a unique shape that requires a special socket that likely will cost more than the replacement sender. I've had three bad senders, so keep you receipt as most come with lifetime replacement warrantee..

I had the same problem. Mine turned out to be a bad oil pressure gauge. I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge and left the oil pressure sending unit wire off. Showing 16 p.s.i. at hot idle. The dash gauge was showing zero.
