My engine died while driving down the express way. Tried to restart it but just cranked. Got a tow next day just rapid clicking from starter solenoid. Battery@ 11.8 volts, fuel ok..what caused this?

Could be the same as mine, ignition coil or various other things..battery, alternator, fuel pump..Does the car crank or click? start up again then die out or completely dead?
