car starts then dies, if I keep the gas pedal pressed it will stay on, as soon as I release  it dies

products like seafoam added into a tank of gas can sometimes clean out the carb jet enough to avoid a total overhaul... worth a try. seafoam has cleaned many a nonfunctioning carb of gum residue from old or bad gas...
