i have a 1979 mercury cougar and the fuel gauge quit working.

the fuel gauge worked then all of the sudden it quit.it has 5.0 with a mechanical fuel pump.
is there a fuse somewhere.

Did you check the ground wire on top of the tank yet ? The mechanical fuel pump has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. Understand your comment is like saying I have a 1/2 inch diameter garden hose with a 1000 gallon water tank but I don't know how much water I have. Check all electrical connections at the tank, at the dash gauge and with the wiring grounds.
